Grants Offered for PhD in Management
Are you interested in a PhD in management? This type of degree opens a number of academic career fields for you, so if you’re interested in teaching or research, rather than just practical work as a manager, this is a great degree to consider. However, as you probably already realize, degrees can be expensive, and a PhD in management is no exception to the rule. Luckily financial aid opportunities, such as grants, can help ease some of the financial burden of pursuing a higher degree.
Financial Aid at the PhD Level
Though it may be harder work on your part to apply for financial aid at the PhD level, it can be well worth the effort if it helps lower the cost of tuition and books. PhD students have many options when it comes to paying for school. Some of these include:
- Grants: Grants can come from the government or private organizations and do not have to be repaid. Often these are awarded to students who show financial need; however, they can also be given to fund specific research or other projects. Depending on the source of the funding, requirements such as maintaining a certain GPA, may have to be upheld.
- Scholarships: These are typically given out based on academic achievements or special talents. Other qualifications could be ethnic background, field of study, or even financial need. These can be awarded by schools or through other organizations and do not have to be repaid.
- Fellowships: This type of award is for graduate or post-graduate students, and are similar to scholarships in that they do not have to be repaid. This type of funding can come from a school, the government, or other private organizations and can be used toward educational costs or to fund research.
- Assistantships: This type of aid allows students to work for their funding. Similarly to undergraduate work-study programs, students generally work as assistant teachers or research assistants, helping professors with classes and day-to-day duties in exchange for financial aid. Specific requirements are set by each school and/or department.
- Tuition Reimbursement: Tuition reimbursement can come from the government or even an employer. Generally tuition is reimbursed to the student in exchange for working for the company for a certain number of years, working in a specific field, working in the state of residence, or other arrangements. This type of financial aid is beneficial to both the student and the organization awarding the money.
- Loans: This type of financial aid does have to be repaid; however, students can usually find loans with low interest rates and lengthy repayment periods. This helps ease the cost of education and allows students to pay back the funds over a set number of years.
Grants versus Other Kinds of Financial Aid
At the PhD level, there are a number of financial aid opportunities, including grants. Grants can be used for tuition, but are also commonly used to fund specific projects. If you want to complete research while you’re in school, grants can be used to give you the money for it. Grants usually include a financial aspect. In other words, you have to need the money to qualify. Scholarships are another common source of money for students – they are more commonly available for undergrads, however. At the PhD level, instead of merit-based scholarships, you’ll more readily find fellowships. They’re like scholarships, but usually come attached with requirements such as serving as a teaching assistant or research assistant on campus.
Management Grants
Grant availability changes from year to year, depending on funding available. As an undergrad, you may have qualified for the Federal Pell Grant, and although you can no longer receive this money for your education, other government resources might be available for you. Your college is also a great source of management grants – most schools have grants specifically for their management students. In addition, outside organizations offer grants for PhD students. Again, availabilities change from year to year for these type of grants.
